ADHD Therapists For Adults & Children

ADHD typically begins in childhood and can continue on into adulthood. Low self-esteem, troubled relationships, and difficulty at school or work can be contributing factors if left untreated. While there is no cure for ADHD, there are several treatments available that can help reduce the symptoms and improve functioning: medication, education/training, psychotherapy, as well as a combination of treatments.

What Is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, more commonly referred to as ADHD, is a chronic behavioral condition affecting millions of children worldwide. Most people think of ADHD as a childhood disorder, and for many, it does appear to improve with age. People can, however, experience this condition well into adulthood.

The symptoms of ADHD vary, but there are three main characteristics — hyperactivity, impulsiveness and inattention. Hyperactivity includes having a difficult time sitting or holding still or being constantly on the go. Impulsiveness is acting without thinking, such as interrupting or blurting out answers without waiting to be called on. Inattention, or problems paying attention, could include getting bored with tasks easily or having problems completing assignments on time or by the deadline.

How Parents Can Support Children With ADHD

Parents of children with ADHD often feel that this condition wreaks havoc on their home life. If you suspect your child may have ADHD, begin documenting their symptoms at home and school. Then, have your child evaluated by a qualified mental health professional. With proper treatment and counseling, even children with severe ADHD can grow up to be happy, successful adults.

ADHD treatment does not cure the disorder. Instead, it helps your child better manage their symptoms so they can learn to cope. At Taylor Counseling Group, we use a combination of methods, including age-appropriate counseling and recommended lifestyle changes. Our team also helps parents learn ways to proactively manage your child’s ADHD so that they can become better organized and follow instructions.

ADHD Therapy for Adults

If you’re struggling at work, have frequent mood swings or trouble coping with stress, you may have ADHD and not even be aware of it. An ADHD diagnosis may bring a sense of relief, as you can now better understand why you have had so many issues. It also offers hope, as treatment can help you better cope and manage your symptoms.

ADHD in adults is frequently underdiagnosed because the symptoms tend to be less clear and more varied than those in children. Whether your ADHD persisted from childhood or you have late-onset ADHD, this condition can lead to a host of relational, work and emotional problems if left untreated.

At Taylor Counseling Group, our ADHD treatment for adults involves a highly individualized approach based on your needs. While ADHD therapy is not a cure, you can usually better manage the condition with treatment.
