Consider the many important decisions you have made in life thus far. Were they based on fear of making the wrong decision or making the desired decision right? At first glance, you may think these options are opposite sides of the same coin, but in actuality they come from two totally different positions of the heart. One is based in self-doubt and the other in self-trust.
The only certain thing in life is uncertainty, and we always end up exactly where we are supposed to be. Uncertainty presents a threat in our mind and we may resort to functioning out of anxiety. We all conceptually know we only get one life and should embrace carpe diem, but more often than not we fall prey to fearing something elusive in the future and regretting the past and all its opportunities. What would it look like to start making decisions not based on all the potential negatives, comparison to others, the label of failure?
To quote Michael Scott quoting Wayne Gretzky, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Challenge yourself to actually trust your gut, make a plan, and commit to follow through. Here are a few questions from life coach Susie Moore that may help in the process:
- How long have I been thinking about this?
- Is this decision in line with my long-term goals?
- What are the risks of my options?
- What is the risk of not doing it?
- What does my past experience tell me about this?
- If not now, when?
- Where is the fun?
