Guided imagery has been found to provide significant stress reduction qualities, including physically relaxing the body and helping one get in touch with profound levels of wisdom that would help them better manage their lives in ways that would lessen anxiety. Guided imagery is a simple tool that can be used at home, work and play that can yield positive results within minutes.
Guided imagery, sometimes known as”visualization,” is a technique in which a person imagines pictures, sounds, smells, and other sensations associated with reaching a goal. Imagining being in a certain environment or situation can activate the senses, producing a physical or psychological effect.
Practicing guided imagery may be able to:
- help reduce feelings of depression and anxiety
- increase feelings of well-being
- increase your ability to keep focused afterward
- help maintain balanced emotions
- increase healthy sleep patterns
One popular type of guided imagery includes creating a “safe place” that you can go to again and again. This “place” might be your favorite vacation spot or an imaginary retreat that would be the perfect getaway. During this guided imagery you can imagine every detail including how you would get there, what you would see, smell, hear, taste and touch while there. After staying a while, you will then come back home. This activity can be used anytime, anywhere. Get comfortable, breathe deeply, and choose a scene and imagine it! Use your senses and relax! Next time you are feeling anxious, give it a go!
